How to turn a new years resolution into a habit

How to turn a new years resolution into a habit

by Daniel Ferguson

How are you feeling coming into the new year? In previous years, for me, the new year has felt like a fresh start. However, this year feels a little different. Recently, I've felt a lot more under control with my life and I have been in a good flow, so I would like to take this going into the new year, rather than starting fresh.

What's your opinion on new years resolutions and new years goals?

There's nothing wrong about having a new year's resolution or some new goals starting the year off right. The thing is, just saying what your new years resolution is doesn't go along way, it's the action you take. Focus your resolution and goals into becoming ingrained in your life, not just a new thing you're doing in a new year.

How to turn a new years resolution into a habit

Plan what you will do consistently to turn your resolution into a habit. What will you do each day to stick to it? What will you do each week?

Check yourself on these things; hold yourself accountable. Write down your resolutions and new desired habits on a weekly to do list, where each day you can either tick or cross if you have done them. It's okay if you happen to fall short in one day, but ensure you catch up the next. Let's say your new years resolution is to stretch everyday: if one day was so busy you didn't get the chance, ensure you do a little bit more the next day or in fact, just make sure you get back into the routine by making sure you actually do stretch the next day.

Align your resolutions and habits with your values

Think about what your values are in life: who do you want to be as a person? Ensure your daily habits fit into your values. Do you value kindness? Then do an act of kindness each day. Do you value saving money? Then save a pound each day. Do you value honesty? Then be honest with yourself with your habits each day, hold yourself accountable.

All the best

In essence, I'm trying to say setting new years resolutions and goals takes a lot more than just answering someone when they ask what your new years resolutions are for the year. Hold yourself accountable by having a system where you can see how many days you have stuck to your habit, you can find day counter apps. Have a daily checklist where you tick or cross if you have done your habit that day. This all builds up, small steps lead to mountains climbed. Focus on the process and the outcome will arrive. All the best in the new year, take care.
